Harpers Bazaar July 2009 Cover Buzz: Angelina vs. Doutzen

I guess the publishing industry is really desperate in these harsh economic times.
The new Harper’s Bazaar cover was revealed hours ago and the internet is abuzz. Why?  The notable fashion magazine has on its newsstand cover a picture of Angelina Jolie from December 2008.  The pictures inside as well are old and the article, by Naomi Wolf, doesn’t even have an interview, but rather an essay on “Why Women Want Angelina Jolie’s Life”, the facts of which I am sure we are all already obviously aware of.

The sad thing is, they are probably going to have a profitable newsstand sales.

How sad that a respectable fashion magazine has to resort to this tabloid fuckery. That Angelina cover looks like US Weekly or In Touch.  Unacceptable.  At least when Anna Wintour resorts to these kind of tricks, she does it in a déclassé way by hiring a high fashion photographer and getting a brand new picture of that celebrity.

On the other side of the coin, a subscribers cover has also popped up with Doutzen Kroes, photographed by Terry Richardson.

I have to admit, not a lot of people know or like Doutzen, and the cover is crisp but boring.  It is a bit of a smart move, although a little misleading and desperate.

What do you think?  Which cover would you like in your possession?

Angelina Jolie's covers sell more than any other celebrity's. So, you're right this issue is STILL bound to sell a lot of copies.

I would've posed for them for free though if they asked.... Haha!

Doutzen has been getting so many covers lately. This one is hot. People will definitely say "Who's That girl?" when they see it at the newsstands, and who knows? Maybe people will buy it. People need a new Victoria's Secret bombshell to love. Doutzen is definitely the next model to cross over into the mainstream. She's already been featured on E! News a few times - and American Vogue still features her pretty often.

not my taste...another pretty blonde girl...I really can't pick her out of a crowd

unless she dates Leonardo Dicaprio (Like Gisele and Bar did) I doubt she can crossover as easily.

Seriously, I do not get what is so special about her? She's no Lara, Coco or Irina...what makes her so special? I am sincerely asking this because I do not get her. Somebody please ingratiate me.

I don't know! Haha! But she has been getting a lot of attention lately for a girl who doesn't do runway, you must admit. She has had covers pratically every month. You may not get all the fuss about her, but she can make a crossover. She's in People Magazine, E! News, American Vogue had an article about how she stays in shape, and she was featured in GQ Magazine - and now this American Harper's Bazaar cover. Those are pretty mainstream.

There's something different about her that strikes me. I can't quite say what it is. Some flare in her that I don't see in others. Although yes she's no Rocha or Lily.

If Brad and Angie's 'charity' and 'humanitarian' work is legit, then why don't they donate directly to the most efficient charities to begin with? Why must the funds be donated to their own foundation first? Why are the donations to and from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation publicized so often within a week of their latest film or DVD release? Why isn't their foundation rated by any independent charity watchdog? Why havn't they spent or granted the majority of their funding so far directly on 'humanitarian' work? Why are the private jets and super high-end accomodations around the world necessary to promote 'good will'? Why would Brad Pitt compete for funding, awareness, and support with the most efficient home building charity organization in the world (Habitat For Humanity)? Why not just endorse and support Habitat instead?

Why in the name of all that is right and logical would a 'humanitarian' squander such obscene levels of limited life sustaining resources on multiple mansions, private jet rides, private helicopter rides, and super exclusive super high-end accomodations around the world? Why in the name of all that is right and logical would a 'humanitarian' deliberately concentrate the world's wealth and resources? Why would they DELIBERATELY expand the gap between the rich and poor? Why would they promote, accept, and celebrate the concept of extreme wealth or obscene compensation for the making of movies? Even now when so many people worldwide struggle to survive? Why not call for a more reasonable, moral, and logical pay-scale for all people? Why not call for a more reasonable distribution of wealth? WHY ARE HOLLYWOOD HUMANITARIANS SUCH DISGUSTING HYPOCRITE SLOBS?

Never would I ever pull a stunt like that. It already bothers me when I see celebs on covers (I prefer fresh models I've never seen), but then to have a picture from OVER A YEAR AGO? Lordy have mercy...it looks way more like a gossip magazine.

Doutzen does not bother me. She is not super high fashion as you pointed out - I understand that. But she is appealing to the average American. She's got the girl next door American pie sort of thing. Lots of couture models look a little freaky...she doesn't.
