John Galliano’s Monumental Debut Christian Dior Haute Couture Show
I am trying to get over my hangover by blogging. Since there is no new news, I thought I’d dig through the archive and share some amazing stuff.
I don’t think there is such a thing as old fashion. If you haven’t seen it yet, then it’s new to you.
This is post is dedicated to John Galliano’s first Christian Dior Haute Couture show, Spring 1997. This show is in my top 5 favorites.
Youth may be wasted on the young, but it is beginning to look as if couture is being wasted on them, too. A couture house, which for some has become more an albatross than a blessing, is perhaps something that 20-something designers should stop wishing on themselves. Finally, at 36, John Galliano licked the couture beast soundly today in his first show for Christian Dior.
It seemed a combination of his marriage to the right house and at last getting the knack of bringing into line the troublesome ateliers, beaders, featherers and other razzle-dazzlers needed for a couture show to be a hit. Mr. Galliano's show was a credit to himself, to Mr. Dior, whose name is on the door, and to the future of the art, which is always in question.
